 Estos esquivos felinos, «fantasmas de la noche», se cuentan entre los predadores de mayor tamaño de América Latina, y su área de distribución se extiende desde el norte de Argentina hasta el norte de México. Los jaguares han perdido más de las dos terceras partes de su territorio original en México y en América Central, y al menos una tercera parte en América del Sur. Aunque en la actualidad hay zonas protegidas en todo su hábitat, muchas de las reservas naturales están absolutamente aisladas. Las organizaciones conservacionistas, con ayuda de los campesinos, tratan de establecer corredores.

   Jaguars are the largest of South America's big cats. They once roamed from the southern tip of that continent north to the region surrounding the U.S.-Mexico border. Today significant numbers of jaguars are found only in remote regions of South and Central America—particularly in the Amazon Basin.
   These beautiful and powerful beasts were prominent in ancient Native American cultures. In some traditions the Jaguar God of the Night was the formidable lord of the underworld.
